Help! Every floor in my house are wide pine boards. They were beautiful 12 yrs ago when we moved in. After multiple pets and kids I', ready to attack the project. I actually like the "well used" look. I would like to keep the dents and such but need to do something with the look of the finish. Some areas and entries are scratched down past the stain. Is there a way to color it just a little (light pine) and then smooth the finish out to look polished. I have no idea what buffing is and whether that is an option. The boards have also shrunk and there are 1/2 to 3/4 inch spaces between each board. Yes, they are a nightmare to keep clean. Is there a natural looking way to fill those spaces?
In my opinion if the floor is scratched down to bare wood I would advise hiring a professional to sand and recoat. As for the gaps the best and most natural way to fill those in is with rope. The brown natural hemp rope, not the yellow or white stuff. The rope can also be stained darker if need be.
Do one thing at a time, do it well, then move on.
