whole bathroom shower basin?
 

I need to completely redo the bathroom, and want to do a much bigger shower there is room for it) There are no pre-made shower basins in the size I want, so it will involve a custom made one either way. It occurred to me that I could just do the entire floor as a shower basin and just hang a curtain to separate it off from the rest of the bathroom. Since the entire floor needs to be redone anyways, I think this would end up being easier over all.

Anyone ever try something like this?

Any other thoughts?

just make sure you do plenty of research on tile showers. Use a membrane like kerdi and waterproof the heck out of it

Is this over a slab or a wood framed floor?

If this is a framed floor, you'll need to make some tricky framing modifications to get proper slope to drain. And the slope needs to cover a wide area since you won't have a curb to contain the water. You also need to consider how to keep other things in the bathroom level, such as the toilet and vanity.

If money is not a big problem consider a slot (channel) drain---These will allow the shower to be pitched from the back to the door---and the slot drain---

the bathroom is over a basement. there are a couple of layers of subfloor and a couple of layers of flooring. I figure If I rip it all out, I'd have enough height to work with to keep any threshold pretty low. Keeping the slope lower on the non-shower portion should also help with that too.

The toilet is pretty near the door if I keep all the current placement. for the vanity, I was thinking a porcelain pedestal sink or a wall hung sink.

What you are proposing, basically, is a "low-threshold handicap accessible shower", and googling that will find you a number of manufacturers of ADA compliant shower bases and complete shower enclosure kits.

There is no reason of course where you can custom build a tile shower of the same general design, but to do it right is going to be an expensive project, and if it's done wrong and your room-sized "shower base" leaks, you may find that you are tearing the whole thing out to fix it!

So you might want to consider the possibility of using a pre-manufactured base, and devoting any excess bathroom square footage to storage.

As I stated in the OP, all the premade bases I found were smaller than I want, so its going to be a custom job either way.
