Where to transition flooring in open doorway?

I have an open doorway connecting my kitchen to the living room. I will soon be installing tile in the kitchen and later, carpet in the living room. In a normal doorway, from what I've researched, you transition your flooring in the center of the door but since it won't have a door I'm not sure it will look right. The opening is 81" Tall, 59" Wide, and the wall is 6" thick. My best guess is to bring the kitchen tile out flush to the living room side. Will that look right when complete?

I have a very similar situation. In fact, almost identical. I will be doing exactly what you state, bringing the kitchen tile out to the edge of the doorway of the other room, so that the flooring of the other room runs straight and parallel to the wall and never enters the doorway. I personally think this gives the best look.

Where to transition flooring in open doorway?

Hi guys,

I disagree with you guys. But there is no law, just a good technique rule. I think the transition should be done in the center of the jamb whenever you have a choice. I sometimes see it done the other way, but I think someone was trying to save a little time.

Yes of course. I don't think it looks professional. Sometimes you don't have a choice because of the size of the room or width of the vinyl or carpet though.

What really looks tacky is when vinyl meets carpet and they install a flat aluminum carpet bar to cover the two. The carpet bar being about 1.5 wide ends up about an inch inside the room with side exposed. Looks like DIY.
