Where to start from

Ok everyone, thanks in advance. I'm ready to start my first hardwood install. I have 1/2" engineered planks. 5" width. This is my first of probably several questions. I'm torn between where to start my first row..I attached a drawing I made with a rough idea of the shape of the room.(not to scale).I will be running boards top- bottom due to floor joist direction. Should I start at right side of hall and work all the way across the middle of the open floor and work left, or start left side of hall and work right. Or start at wall with front door and just work all the way across. I have splines to switch direction? I figure starting up and down the hall was the longest straight line. Another question, the planks come in lengths of 4', 3' and 1'. Do I use the 1' pieces mixed in with the 3' and 4' all throughout or do I just use the 1' pieces for the sides.
