What is under my carpet?

I want to remove my carpet and lay down some sort of laminate flooring. So my questions are, is there hardwood under every carpet in every house? If not what are some of the different things that could be under it? Just a little more info...the original house is about 50 years old. However, this particular part of the house is only 17 months old.

My last two questions are, how do I lift the carpet to check what is under it and to pull it up to change it? Finally, is changing the flooring difficult? Both my husband and I are complete idiots when comes to anything that requires a little handy work.

Usually the carpet is only held down by a tack strip around the perimeter of the room. I would go to a corner and gently pull up the carpet and see what is underneath. If it's not hardwood then put it back down and tuck it back under the baseboard. My guess would be that if this is a new addition that it would just be plywood subfloor underneath.

If you are lucky, it's plywood. More likely it's OSB or particle board.

do you have a vent in the room that you can pull out and look at what is under it without touching the carpeting. If you lift the carpet you may loose the stretch of the carpet. that may not matter thou if you are looking to replace it soon.. if not don't do it.
