I'm preparing to stain and finish a new just installed oak hardwood floor. I was told that a vibrating sander was better to use than a drum because being my first time it was less likely to damage the wood. Will it do as good job and would you agree. I would appreciate any and all advice to make this job easier but right.
If it is new flooring it probably doesnt need much sanding to make nice and flat. I have used both. I prefer drum sander for refishing and getting rid of old finish and scrathes quickly. A drum sander can do a lot of damage if you are not careful. For new flooring it probably doesnt need much sanding. I would go with a vibrating sander (orbital) I put in 1000 sq ft of oak flooring and my 14 yr old son did the sanding in a few hours. Unsupervised---thats how easy it is.
another nice thing about the orbital is they go right up against the wall. the drum sander you have 8-12" you will have to finish with a edger. running the risk of creating a noticeable line or snipe where you stopped with the drum sander.
