What does this look like to you ??

1. No that's ok. Are the 1x1's going on the walls too? Usually the curb top matches the wall tiles. But I guess you can do it anyway you want for design.

2. Let the tile setter supply everything you need. The pan is also available by itself.

It's normal to give him a deposit to save your time on the calendar and to get materials etc, yes of course. But anyone with good credit does not need your money for that purpose. He just said it that way for some reason. In case of last minute cancellation, most ordered materials can be saved or returned, (for 20% or more charge). It's the time that can't be made up. So do not cancel.

If you do biz with a large company, you'll sign a bunch of papers saying they can come and take for first-born and house too. They might require a 50% deposit up front, (which is ok), but the important part is when they get the rest. Many times with a large company you pay 100% before all the work is done, or they are allowed to charge your account. Plus of course a large company has to charge you more than an independent is likely to charge for his time.

The way I do it is a little different. I don't do this all the time, but..... 1/3 when we agree to work together, 1/3 when I start work and bring the materials to the jobsite, final 1/3 the day I finish which is when I grout, in most cases.

Where do you live again? Oh yea TN if I recall. Not sure if licensing is required there, many don't bother, but if required it's illegal to do certain trades without one. Here in MI, a contractor can not charge more than $600 total if not licensed where required.
