What is the added cost of heated floors?

We are getting ready to have part of our home tiled with porcelain tile. I think it would be a great addition to have heated floors but I'm not sure about the added cost.

1) How much does it electric do these things use?

We won't need it much but I think the radiant heat would help cut down on the use of the forced heat during winter, since we live in Florida it doesn't stay cold long and we don't use the heat much. The radiant floors would almost heat everything we need...I believe.

2) About how much does it cost to add heated floor?

We are tiling about 950 sq. feet.

3) Where is the best place to purchase a larger area like ours?

We purchased ours from Radiant Floor Company. They were very good to deal with.

Electric radiant heat typically uses 12-15 watts per square foot. You can compute the cost to heat based on the cost per kilowatt hour where you live, and how long per day you want to have the floor on.

Cost to install depends on whether you are doing the install or not. Cost for the radiant mat is somewhere around $5 per square foot when you figure in the thermostat, matting, and thinset over the mat. You can get exact pricing from a manufacturer, prices vary somewhat depending on which brand you go with.

Thanks.

Is that $5 extra on top of the material for radiant floors?

If so that's like double the price of what we're paying to have the tile put in.
