ways to clean hardwood floors, without resurfacing?

i bought a house with 40-year-old hardwood floors. i don't think they need to be resuraced -- they are not THAT bad -- but they could definitely use some help.

any ideas? i have no idea about this stuff.

a friend recommended renting a buffer. Is that a good idea? Is it a ton of work?

no, buffer wont do anythhing, sounds like you need a screen and coat, which basically means giving it a very light sand and applying a fresh top coat, relatively cheap and works great.
