Vinyl over old linoleum

Bow would I go about laying a vinyl floor over very old linoleum? There are some spots where it is worn/rotted a bit. I guess a subfloor needs to be laid first. It's a small area, perfectly rectangle, so it should be pretty straight forward. Would I just put down 3/4" plywood or special type subfloor material? Then does the vinyl adhesive go right over that?

...because this is just a temporary fix as my 86+ year old folks are probably not gonna be in this house much longer. House will probably be gutted and remodeled in the not to distant future. That's why.

Use floor patch on the bad spots. Install an IVC back vinyl like Flexitec over the top of the lino.

Ok. Sorry for the smartass comment. The subfloor isnt necessarily rotted..,just the linoleum. Pretty sure the subfloor underneath is solid. Frankly, it probably could be just leveled/patched as suggested above. And...it won't be me or any of my siblings gutting/remodeling this house when they move on...so won't be doing it twice. Honestly, any rehabber would probably rip this little (formerly a porch) attached room off and rebuild it.
