Vinyl floor tiles on vinyl floor

Not ready to do a complete kitchen do-over but for the meantime looking to cover up the 1980's rolled out green vinyl floor with new vinyl 12x12 tiles. Can I get away with vinyl on vinyl? Really would rather not take it up since I cant tell how well the plywood is underneath. Dont want this to snowball. Also do I need to use a roller once the vinyl is down? Thanx

Not a great idea, it will not stay stuck down and any imbossed pattern in the old floor will just show through.

Like Joe says, the old vinyl needs to come up. And if you are talking about peel and stick vinyl tiles, they don't last long whatever you do.
