very old house whats under the kitchen tile... woodfloors??

we have a very old house over the years we have that most of the floors are wood in pretty good shape. the kitchen floor is about 3/4 in taller than ajoining floors with stick square tile on top.which makes me think that there is plywood is there any way to tell if there is hard wood floors under all that.... in a easy way? lol i think i just answered my own question. but if anybody has a good idea before i present this to my hubby i really would appreciate it.thanks

If there is a floor heating register---pull it out and look---also look up from the cellar.

Depending on the age of the house---could be maple---could be pine with real linoleum--

No way anyone here can tell you what someone has done to your floors with out being there.
Any really old house started out with 5/4 X 6" diaganal pine subflooring.
After that it's anyones guess what has been done over the years to that floor.

My house was build in 1965 (which isn't terribly old) and this what we pulled up to subfloor.

From top to bottom:

Pergo Laminate
Linoleum square tiles
Some old yellow gross linoleum
Plywood
Some other tile that looked like brick 0 flacked easily

We didn't know what we got ourselves into once we started...which is how the story goes with most people doing the same.

If it's a really old house then yes, there were hardwood floors under there, originally. But there might not be anymore depending on what renovations have been done. That said, if the floor is that much higher than adjoining areas, it's a good bet that they layered it right on top of what was there.

Mike has the right idea. Also, try pulling out the fridge or another appliance as often the floor does not go all the way under them, or they are sitting on plywood that you can pull up to see what's underneath.
