Tile needs a substrate. I would recommend Ditra.

Hi bull,

You think backer board is expensive? OH boy, maybe you want carpeting instead? :whistling2:

You can NOT install any tile on hardwood. You can NOT even install backer board over hardwood. You need to removed the hardwood, then evaluate and probably add a plywood underlayment then install the backer or Ditra, and then the tiles.

The pier and beam construction common on the left coast can also be problematic at times, but most of the time it can be done if the subfloor is thick enough.
