Uneven hw floor to vinyl transition

My kitchen vinyl floor is 1/2" above my subfloor in my living room (where we just layed prefinished 3/4" oak). I was going to use the prefinished reducer strip with groove, but it is uneven. Is there an easy way to carve the 1/2" off of the bottom of the reducer strip. I don't have a table saw. Other ideas? I guess I could cut the vinyl back, but would prefer to go over tiop instaed of meeting the two.

*This is a flush reducer...would like to avoid an overlap reducer...we're a clumsy family.
