Undersized Laminate Planks
I recently purchased some Homelegend laminate flooring at Home Depot. During the installation I discovered that the 5" planks in our order were actually 4.9" wide - this difference spread across a large room resulted in needing an extra row of planks (thus extra box of material) to complete the project.

Can anyone tell me if this variation is within tolerance for this product? We're talking a 2% difference, and it's consistent throughout the entire (21 boxes) order. This is a special order item, and was not cheap. The manufacturer states they are ISO9001 certified.

I'm curious if this is a case of "Gotcha Capitalism" ... a 2% reduction in material on my order alone would be over $16 of "pure profit" - when you extrapolate that to the quantities Homelegend sells to Home Depot it quickly turns into real money!

Actual square footage is listed on the box. And you always allow for loss. And Home Depot does not sell any quality flooring.

As for the SF on the box, there's the issue - based on the face measurement each box is short by 1/4 SF. And I allowed 10% waste, as I always do on laminate, but only got 8%.

I'm just wondering if this is an anomaly, or a sneaky way to put an extra 2% on HL's balance sheets.

Contact HD & explain the issue
Bring a sample in & show them the sq ft is off
They should issue a partial refund
False advertising is false advertising
Special order item...... :(

Many consumer items have been shrinking in size as the cost goes up
In some cases the size decreases instead of the price increasing

they sell as 2x4 but are 1.5x 3.5 now thats a serious material loss. as bob say you should have been informed of coverage per box not based on nominal size. good luck with that one

I jusr put down some of the same with no problems actual face measurement was 5".

I went to HD and discussed it with the flooring department supervisor. We got the manufacturer on the phone and found out this isn't the first call they've had about this issue, and "are having their manufacturing people look into it."

They offered to comp me an additional box of product to finish the job, with expedited shipping so I wouldn't have to wait 2 weeks to finish my project. That was on December 3rd ... after multiple follow-up calls and visits I found out it wasn't even shipped until the 10th, and as of today I still don't have it. It seems I have a different understanding of what "expedited" means.

An interesting side note - we had gotten a couple of samples of the flooring when we ordered it (for color matching), and the samples measure 5" wide.

I finally ran out of patience:

Sounds like the people at your local HD aren't worth a darn. I would find somewhere else to shop. At this point, I would almost be tempted to pull it all up and dump it back in there store and demand a refund. Let them haggle with the manufacturer. I know it might not make sense to tear it up, but as I get older, I have less tolerance for people's screwups and lack of care afterward. I guess it becomes a matter or principle. I was a firefighter for 25 years. If I treated people like they treated you, I would have been out of a job in short order. Sorry to hear about your trouble in dealing with them. Let us know what happens.

The flooring finally arrived at Home Depot on Tuesday, December 22, a day short of three weeks after my visit to the store to discuss the issue.

Still no call from customer service with either organization ... I don't get the feeling they want my business.
