Underlayment for laminate

Is it necessary to put underlayment under laminate flooring? We plan to go over existing vinyl tile in dining area and plywood in the kitchen. Is underlayment more for soundproofing or does it help the laminate to lay better?

it helps keep the warranty!

Since the beginning, lams have had underlayment.
Until they invent one that doesn't need it, I would use it.
It's cheap stuff anyway.

I agree. No point in voiding your warrantee just to save a little time and $$$. The better the underlayment the more sound absortion you will enjoy.

It will sound hollow anyway ,no need to enhance the echo from the laminate by not doing so.It will also help with the flatness of the floor and give it something to rest on:cool:
