i am also putting down wood (laminate really) and we have wood trim which is stained clear. i decided to paint it all white to seperate the floor from the wall. i think it's going to look really good..
Diann,
If you are putting down shoe molding, it should match the finish on the baseboards. So if you have painted base, paint the shoe to match. The shoe is part of the baseboard trim, not the floor.

I used pre-finished white trim from Lowe's. Came in 8 foot lengths. Base board was painted first. When I used a white silicone (no or very few nails), I glued to baseboard only, never floor.
The stuff was not wood and was manmade, very light and reasonably priced. Called crystal white cove. Bar code 65096 84984. I am pleased so far.
