Transition between two types of 3/4" hardwood flooring

We recently installed 3/4" Brazilian Cherry in two rooms, which join to another room/hall that has 20 year old 3/4" Red Oak floors. We left ~1.5" gap between the two floors (shown in the picture before). The easy solution here is to get a T moulding.

Would that be our only option, or can we possibly trim back the edges of the new floor to 3.25" and install a perpendicular board of Cherry to make a flush transition? The expansion rates of the two floors isn't too much different, but one is brand new, the other has been there for 20 years. The house is dry right now due to heat being on for the past 2 months, central air in the summer although humidity inside does go up ~15-20% during warmer months.

I appreciate any insight and expertise you can offer!
