Toe Board on stair landing

Our carpenters glued down the toeboard on my upstairs landing and then nailed in several spots.

I had stained the wood and had to fill the nail holes. Never could find an exact match, so I applied stain over the filler and tried to blend it in.

Didn't work. Can tell where it was applied. I need help since I can't take the toeboard up and must repair it in place.

Toe Board on stair landing

What kind of wood is it? A picture would help explain what it looks like. You can find filler to match most an wood color. Try Woodcraft on line. They have filler kits.

Toe Board on stair landing

It is hickory. The problem I am having is do I make the situation worse by removing the already filled holes and start over or try to somehow make what I have already filled in blend in and create a smooth color on the toeboard.

Would applying clear wax and buffing smooth it out?
