Tiling with slate of various width

Tiling a floor with 12x12 slate pieces...however they are of various widths. I try to match them as much as possible but it is not possible to have a totally level floor with this tile. Is this common when working with slate or do I just have some poorly cut tile. I bought it from Home Depot.

And visa versa. You bought ungauged slate which is installed in a completely different manner. You do not just set it into thin set mortar.

Chances are that besides not being gauged, it may also be a very poor quality. It's probably from India or China. We find people are having lots of problems since the stone is very soft. Some have described it as one notch above mud. It'll be fine in a couple more million years.

Where are you trying to put it and what type of substrate do you have?
