tiling a patio

I have a small outdoor patio on the second floor. I plan to lay tiles on it. How do I choose what kind of tiles to use? The place I live is in Pleasanton, California. Hot in the summer, rainy and cold (frost possible) in the winter.

Thanks in advance

The patio is made of wood. I think there's a layer of plywood, and then a layer of metal (like on the roof), and put some cement on top.

Do you mean that the floor has too be very sturdy to tile? It makes sense. If the underlining is soft, then the tiles will all become loose after a while. Is that what you are thinking?

Yes, the patio as of now is kind of squashy. You can feel that some part is soft.

Thanks.

Tile needs a very stable base. Out door tiling over a wood structure is always a challenge----

Humidity and heat cause even a strong structure to move----

The tiles must also be set over a waterproof bed---tile and grout are not water proof---water must be kept from reaching the wood structure in order to keep the wood from swelling and dislodging the tile work.

Do you need to tile? I've found & used walkable roof membranes for small flat roof projects. Google 'walkable roof membrane' and you will get several products on the first page.
