Tiling a fireplace.

We have a painted brick fireplace that I would like to tile over. Do I need to prepare the surface because it is painted? We use the fireplace with an insert and burn wood. Is there specific tile to be used and mortar/thinset in order to withstand the heat? Thanks!

If you are tiling the face surface of the surround heat shouldn't be an issue if you use thinset mortar. In truth the paint should be scuffed back to the brick. Typically a painted surface can be a bond-breaker for a tile installation but in the case of a brick structure there should be plenty of edges for the thinset to grab onto.

Hi
I did the exact procedure as commented by Bud, a few years ago and have had "0" problems with my tile work. It's all about the surface prep.

Good Luck!
