tiling backsplash over sheetrock with glue

Had a backsplash made of formica..pulled off the formica and there is glue all over the wall. Plan to scrape off excess glue and oil base prime any rips in the sheetrock. Do you think I can tile over this glue? Is there anything else I should do? Thanks

You should be fine---as long as the surface is flat enough.

That depends a lot on the tile you are using---bigger tiles will take a thicker layer of thinset and can tolerate a bit of unevenness-- Small mosaics?---Better be good and flat or the work will show the bad wall.

Skim coating the glue ridges might be an option---I'd have to see how bad the wall is before I could offer an opinion.

I'm glad you asked this question, because i'm remodeling a rental house and i have the same scenario. I was hoping a search would turn up some answers. The glue on mine is very smooth on a wall of 1/4 inch plywood placed on top of drywall. Would i need to cover the plywood with something else, or prime the surface and proceed?

Prime it with a liquid waterproofing for tile and go for it.

A lot of 1/4" plywood is Luan--which is very absorbent and not water proof at all--as a mater of fact it will start to delaminate from the water in the thinset.

So --I second what Bud suggested---buy a tub of Red Guard at the depot--paint on the water proofer--and then set your tiles with a modified thin set.----You will be good to go--Have fun---Mike---
