Default Tile on stair risers and landing

Should I be using mastic or thinset.

I'd use thinset. Not a big fan of mastic.

Just a side note:
Be sure that the addition of tile to the stairs does not affect them dimensionally. The rise and run of the stairs cannot be modified in most cases without violating code. Furthermore, a 3/4" nose is required at each tread, and a lot of people overlook this when doing tile stairs.
