Tile repair

I have a broken tile in my shower leaving about a 4x2 inch hole. Rather than replacing the tile i would just like to fill in the hole with grout. Do i need anything beside the grout like a grout sealer?

Grout is not designed to fill a void that large. When mixed to the right consistency it would "roll" out of that large of a void due to gravity. I dont feel you will get a good water tight fix by trying to do grout alone. A tile retailer, be it a home improvement center or a tile dealer, will cut a piece of tile for you (make sure to leave about 1/16" to 1/8" gap, that is where the grout will seal the opening). It may not match what you have now, but atleast you will have a much more permement water tight fix.

You're much better off carefully chipping out the remainder of the broken tile, and replacing it, even if the replacement tile is not identical.

What tool would you recommend for chipping out the remainder of the tile?

With a soft hand you could try a hammer and flat blade screwdriver. What you do not want to do is harm the backing where the tile is attached. Wear protective glasses,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ceramic in the eyes is not fun, I know, and tap tap tap till the piece you want to come out is gone. Get the new piece, grout and shower to your hearts contents safely!!!!!!!

Before you start trying to remove the tile, remove the grout from all the way around it. They make a grout saw for this, or just use an old screwdriver and dig it out. Removing the grout will lessen the chance of damaging the surrounding tile.
