Tile patterns - perceptual effects

I'm wondering how different ceramic floor tile patterns affect people's perception of different rooms.

Basically what are all the perceptual tricks and effects available.

i.e. when to use running bond vs jack on jack, diamond, basket weave, etc.

Tile patterns - perceptual effects

We did a standard brick pattern in our kitchen to run the same way as the HW in the ajoining rooms and I think it gave the illusion that the ktichen looks bigger.
