Tile over vinyl Floor??

pwgsx,

The top vinyl peels off, under it is almost like carboard- no foam.
How can you be so sure? There is a 100% chance there is foam.

Layer 1 is the backing. In the old days, (mid-80' + - and prior), it usually contained asbestos. Layer 2 is the foam. With cheap thin vinyl the foam is likely to be only 1/32". The top wear layer is pvc, like a sheet of Saran Wrap.

The foam is treated with a chemical where the pattern and texture will be that prevents it from 'rising' when it's baked. So that is how you get the pattern and texture. After that the pvc finish is applied, finished.

I know who you are. You are one of those guys who thinks you can reinvent the wheel to make it better. I say that cuz you wanna add #333 additive to Versabond. Why would you do that? You are not the first to have this situation. It's been done millions of times.

So, peel the top layer including the foam. Soak the remainder with hot water and scrape with a wallpaper scraper. http://www.core-industrial.com/manag...%20(Small).jpg

I only said Versa Bond bc thats what this tile guy said at Home Depot when I called. However I looked at it and its Modified. I do know the 333 needs only to be added to Un-Modified Motar and will be getting that shortly. Everyone can rest easy

You have not yet learned the #1 rule in flooring DIY. Do NOT ask for or listen to advise given by those nice people who wear vests. There are a few exceptions to this rule, very few. The higher ups at those companies would rather not hire anyone with experience. Yours is a simple thing, others have not been as lucky.

Good for you for sticking around and reading everything....

Truth is they/we won't rest easy until we know a project is going to get done right the first time. It's cause we've all learned the hard way....

Oh great Teri, just my luck! I try to give you a little credit and put a positive spin on things and you fess up in front of everyone. Didn't your mother ever tell you that raw-honesty is a great virtue but also a virtue you can trip over? You would never make a good politician.

Bud...In front of everyone.. chivalry is not dead!! Thank you for having my back! I'm just one of those people who are too honest, at the expense of myself (and others?) What can I say, I'm a New Yorker!!! I'd make a horrible politician!!
