tile over plywood repair

i had to replace a 3x5' plywood area outside my shower along with shower floor.....I used one big sheet of plywood...... After laying the 1/4" cement board back down. The tile is flush with existing tile. After mortar i think it will be a hair to high. Can i remove that cement board and maybe do something else on the floor outside the shower?

Can get picutres if needed......

How was it done before? What is the cause of the variance?:)

Well I should have put that in there!!!Will be a little more specific it's not the whole area just a few small spots.
BEFORE plywood, 1/4" cement board, mortar, tile

Cause-debris maybe on the truss beneath, keeping me 1/8" high

I was considering just removing that particular piece of cement board (less than a sq foot) and doing just a mortar base and hope it sticks.... the two high spots are against the wall, non-traffic areas??? what would you do?

Can you grind the backeboard down? You only need a reduction of about 1/16" or so. Use a corborundum rub stone or even an orbital sander with 50-60-80 grit paper.:)
