Tile demo to lay vinyl...

Plan is to remodel my utility/laundry room. It's in pretty bad shape, especially the floor. The previous owner did a real slop job, and installed 16x16" tile, with thinset right over the old subfloor.

I have all the tile and group ripped up. At this point, I am just looking to lay vinyl as this will eventually be a rental.

I need to come up a bit for the adjoining room anyway, so I was thinking of putting down some 1/2" plywood over the existing subfloor and putting the vinyl over that.

I may be over thinking this, but I'm curious what you guys think I should should do with the thinset on the subfloor to get it as flat as possible for the plywood. There is quite a bit in some areas.

Hammer drill with wide chisel bit?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sure looks like they just layed it over hardwood flooring.
If It was my job I would keep going until I got to the floor joist, Lay 3/4" Advantec with constrution adhesive on the joist using ring shank #8 nails or ceramic coated decking screws.
Then subfloor rated sanded plywood whatever thickness needed to get the floors level.
No way are you going to be able to lay sheet goods directly over that old floor.

Thanks for the input. The subfloor is 3/4" t&g planks that run perpendicular to the joists. Just gut em' huh? How should I go about cutting the planks that run under walls? Maybe a toe-kick saw as close to the wall as possible?

That's the tool I would use. Going to also need a sawsall or ossilating saw to ge the inside corners.
