Question

Tile cutting saw

I need to rent a saw to cut some floor tiles 12"x12". Will i also be able to cut 3"x6" subway tiles with the same saw? There was a few saws for rent at home depot but i didn't know which one to get? The guys who work there don't seem to know any better either. lol / thx

Question

Tile cutting saw

FYI,
The 12x12 is ceramic and 3x6 is the white subway tile from Home Depot.
12x12 about 15-20 floor diagonal cuts and 3x6 about 40-50 shower end pieces.
All the tiles that did not need cuts have already been installed.
I plan to purchase new blade for rental saw.

Can i rent one saw for both these tiles? thx

They are both "ceramic" tiles.

Are the 12X12's porcelain tiles?
If porcelain (which is also ceramic) they will be somewhat harder than regular ceramic floor tiles. Porcelain requires a substantial blade but anything that will cut porcelain will easily cut the lessor subway tiles.

It would be nice to know the brand name and blade size of the rental saws you are asking about. Can't begin to tell you what to expect without knowing what machines are available to you.

"The guys who work there don't seem to know any better either..." Yeah, imagine that! The HD closest to me rents out about a gazillion different tools, which is great. But one of the guys who works in the tool rental area is named Ian, and you can tell by looking that he's never bent over a done a lick of manual labor in his life! But there is an older guy there, who really knows his beans, so all is not lost!

The tile saw I own is a cheap little piece of crap that I bought on sale - probably at Menards - for about $50. It has a 4" blade, and is like a tiny table saw with a water trough underneath. Weirdly enough, it has been an amazing saw! I've done subway tiles, 4x4s, and 12x12s with no problems.

I've also rented a big commercial tile saw from HD. It was at least a 7" blade, and maybe bigger. It is like a radial arm saw that shoots water on the blade. It was fantastic! If I tiled all the time, I'd own that saw.

That said, yes the same saw can cut both your subways and your 12x12s.

Hey Bud - do you ever use a tile cutter, such as this one?

I've got one, and am amazed by how much I end up using it - and how well it works. For pretty much anything that's a single, straight cut, this is what I use.

only had 2 tiles with a right angle , instead of renting wet saw, was able to make cuts with diamond blade on angle grinder. lot of dust. made cuts outside.

Like DrHicks, I bought a cheap little 7" wet tile saw that I used for 13" porcelain tiles on a floor and shower. It came with two blades and did the job fine for me. The cost was just a couple bucks more than renting a big saw for a day, I don't have to run into town to pick it up and return it (40mile round trip), and I get to keep it for other projects down the road.

Those "score & pop" machines have their place but the OP has already said:

You'll waste more tile than you will cut successfully with one of those things.

Yes but mine are all Rubi brand. Use them all the time under the right circumstances.
