Tile and carpet on concrete basement floor

I have french doors leading to the patio from my walkout basement. I am going to tile the area in front of the french doors because the carpet gets too dirty. Do I need the utilize any type of edging (like the metal or aluminum trim) where the carpet is going to meet the tile. I've seen the edges of carpet rolled and tacked around the border of the tile when its on a wood subfloor. Any suggestions?

Ceramic tile or vinyl? Either one you can buy a transition.
