is this in a wet area? it is ok to set tiles over dry wall. i prefer backer board because it will not rot or become damaged from moisture.

dry wall ill be fine. i prefer to use thiset vs. mastic when i set tiles. it will hold up longer and moisture doesn't affect it

home depot tells them to. no mixing. longer pot life. close the bucket and use it next weekend.

I would use mastic for this application. It comes in smaller quantities and will work just fine in this case. No muss no fuss!

but how hard is it to mix some thinset from a bag in a paint bucket with a blender-like attachment to a regular drill (one of my favorite recent tool discoveries that saves a lot of time and effort mixing small amounts) or even doing it manually in a tub?

Oh now you want to argue?
What the hell would you do with the remaining 47 pounds of thinset that will be left over. Why would you also want to clean the bucket and the mixer if it isn't necessary?

i dont blame you one bit. my preference is always thinset even on a dry backsplash. maybe im a little "old school". dont get me wrong, i like the ease of use on a lot of the new products but in my own house i still like mud jobs, thinset and pack mud w/wet setting the tiles on my shower floors. the OP question was "why would anyone choose mastic over thinset?" at any point i would assume.

i always keep buckets with lids of things like mortar mix, thinset, and grout, just like you would have jars of flour or sugar in the kitchen.

yes, cleaning is a little messy but i have a streamlined system for that as well.
