Tar paper between subfloor and particle board?

When taking up the carpet in our bedroom to replace it, I noticed the carpet was laid over 1/2" particle board. So I decided to replace the particle board with 1/2" plywood, but when taking up the particle board I noticed tar paper under it (sub floor - tar paper - particle board). I'm assuming it's either used as a air barrier or to keep the two materials from rubbing together. Should I replace and go back with tar paper or use a different product? Thanks

Tar paper or rosin paper will work.

Rosin paper is similar to the Sunday funnies, but cost more (both have about the same perm rating).

Tar paper is sometimes used over a crawlspace, is this the case?

Its a pier and beam house with a crawl space the tar paper is sandwiched in between the plywood and 1/2" particle board. Thanks

Be certain you have the crawlspace earth covered with a vapor barrier poly.

IMHO, the tar paper was there to (supposedly) protect the particle board from rising moisture from below as most crawls are vented with the humidity under there-- closely matching outside RH. However; asphalt coated felt paper (5-30 perms) --- or 15# sheathing paper (3-20 perms) would not be my first choice (especially protecting wood strip flooring- not your application- for others) as it is variable permeability (the wetter= more vapor passing through) where AquaBar B is 0.87 perms and your plywood (3/8") is 0.75 perms. So, the plywood alone will slow the vapor coming from the crawl, but not Rosin paper (+50 perms), which could easily become "mold food". You don't need either for a "slip sheet" as the top layer of plywood should be firmly attached to the subfloor boards (and securely fastened to prevent "creep") as an "underlayment" anyway; http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...KEftFQ&cad=rja

Use it if it makes you feel better, but most have an odor that lasts a long time. Or if local code requires it, ask AHJ.
