Suggestions Needed - Laminate on Staircase

I have installed laminate flooring in our bedrooms upstairs and planned to continue to the stairs.

I pulled off the carpet on the top step before doing the hallway upstairs and the stair nosing was a separate piece that I removed so I can install laminate on the back of the top step and install a stair nose piece.

However when I pulled off the carpet on the other four steps today the stair nosing is part of the step. I can't attach the new nosing as it would stick out too far.

My wife and father in law suggested sanding the steps (pine) and staining them to match the laminate that I would need to install on the risers.

I would prefer to install laminate on steps and risers but would expect I would need to cut the existing stair to make it flat.

Would this work and if so how much of the original step should I leave?

cut the stairnose off so it is flush with the riser. then you can install the lam stairnose just fine.

When I installed stair-nosings on the stairs I put laminate on, they were very flimsy -- so flimsy that I didn't dare use a dolly on the steps. We regularly slipped down the stairs, and the combination of problems made us swear we'd never put nosings on again.

My buddy put laminate down, and instead of wood nosings, he used a rubberized nosing that you glue down similar to what you're use with lino (I think?) Anyway, it was way better than the nosings I tried.

Hope this helps!

ususally a runner is a great idea when installing lam on stairs.
Also having pieces of carpet cut into squares, having no slip grip glued to the back and then binding will work as well.
