subfloor odor - NOT PET ODOR

There is a room in our house (we have lived here 5 years) that has a distinct odor. It is hard to describe the odor but is is not pet odor or chemical, mold or gas as far as I can tell. For a long time I suspected it was in the carpet. However, we just removed the carpet and it is very clear now that the smell is coming from the plywood subloor. Now that the carpet is gone the room really smells. The odor is almost like some type of room deodorizer smell. There are 3 sections of subfloor that are different from the rest (they appear to be newer) and they do no smell at all. We tried washing the subfloor in bleach and that seemed to make it worse. Now it smells like deordorizer and bleach. The plywood had random spots of what appears to be a white almost drywall or plaster like substance on it. When it gets wet is turns kind of pasty. As far as I can tell though the smell is not from the plaster substance - it is in the wood. Has anyone ever encountered this?

subfloor odor - NOT PET ODOR

Post a picture of the wood----a few years ago , some plywood from the far east was made of a stinky wood.

I bought a sheet of 3/4" to make some shop cabinets----just awful smell----burned the wood after cutting--the smell was -------I can't even describe it.
