stuck finish nail

Hi

I have a few finish nails on the wood trim of my staircase that are sticking out a few mm. I have tried to nail it in with a nail set, but will not go in any further; and I have tried using a plier to pull out nail but unable to get a hold since only 1-2 mm sticking out

I do not think it is sticking out enough to use hack saw, any other ideas

It is a pick annoying to be stepping on these will going up stairs

thanks

Peter

These are absolutely invaluable-you don't cut off the nail, you just use these to pry it out

You can also use a small grinding wheel mounted in an arbor and chucked in your electric drill to grind the nail flush with the stair surface, but this method requires some care.

Or, use a nail set to bend over the nail and force the head under the wood surface but the bending over has to be parallel with the wood grain.

I would just grind them down with a rotary tool (aka dremel). You can use one of the grinding stones and a heavy duty cutting wheel. If you don't own one and don't want to shell out $80+ get the black and decker rotary tool. It runs for about $25 on walmart.com
