Stretching carpet

I had to take up the carpet from the tack strips in a 12' x 14' room in order to roll back for termite treatment in a finished breezeway. Now I need to restretch and reattach the carpet. From searching various sites and this forum, it seems that a kicker is only used to attach the carpet in one corner for a starting point. After that a stretcher is used. I have been unable to find any details on methods, techniques and pattern to follow. Please reply only if you have experience doing this.

Thank you, Rusty. This is exactly what I am seeking. I had hoped to do the job today but had been advised by several others to just get a kicker. The rental shop also had a stretcher but the clerk did not know anything about laying carpet and thought that it was only used for large rooms. So it will be next weekend before I get back to this. Stay tuned for the results.

Rented a stretcher and kicker for $45 and used the pattern in the directions that Rusty sent. The hardest part was correctly assembling the stretcher: instructions were very basic and it took me a few attempts to get it right. After that, it was quick and easy.

None of the information I have seen mentioned stapling it down after hooking to the tack strips but I found that mine was when I took it up. I did not have that type staple so I substituted carpet tacks.
