Stalled in Galveston: Need Hardwood Finishing Help
Hi, I am an avid diy'er and I am slowly renovating an old home little by little. I am stalled out on an issue and hope someone out there might be able to get me back on track. I recently pulled up carpet in my daughters room and decided to whitewash the floors so that I could still see the natural grain of the wood. Everything went fine with the stain and I read online that tung oil would be the best for getting a glossy topcoat that would protect the floors. The problem is that the tung oil makes the white stain look yellow and that is not what I was going for. I have only done half of the floor and I don't know how to move forward. Do I rent a sander an start over or can I stain over the tung oil and then use another product over that...which would then pose the question, what product do I use to seal and protect the floor without being yellow?

#1 There is no mention of what the floor your trying to work on is made of.
#2 No pictures.
#3 Tung oil is only for bare wood.

You now have oil floating on top of the surface.
Not that you have put oil on it anything you do to it now in the way of sealing, staining, painting may fail becuse there's now oil filling the pores.
May have to go with a laminite or engineered floor now.

The floor was bare oak that I whitewashed then added the tung oil. Someone told me I could whitewash over the tung oil again and then add a sealer over the top but that was my fear that anything over the top would fail.

Would I be able to use a drum sander and take it down to the wood again and start over? Or should I just paint over all with an oilbased primer and paint and be done?
