Stairway tread options

We are building a garage with an apartment above.

The stairway leading to the apartment is enclosed, but unheated.

The flooring in the apartment will be wood laminate.

This is a guest house on the same property as a lakefront home. So traffic will be somewhat wet. I just do not like the idea of linolium just looks cheap. Wood is out of the question too expensive.

Anybody have any thoughts? Thought about rubber but it seems that manufacturers want to charge more than wood.

Thanks in advance
