What type of wood should I use for indoor stairs.

That's up to and how you want it to look and how much money you want to spend.
Most common are pine and red oak but there's dozens of other wood they can come in.
Just Google "stair treads" to see some ideas.

You may have wood under the carpet. It does not hurt to check. Then you could save a lot by just refinishing these. If you don't the most common woods on stairs would be oak or maple.
