stair help

I have replaced ask the carpet in the house with laminate wood. I'm now at the stairs and decided to put in solid oak treads for longevity purposes and am a stand still. I didn't take out the wood stairs that was under the carpet because it is a condo and I don't own under them.what would be the best way to attach the new treads and risers to the existing construction grade stairs? I was going to use wood shims in three strips to level the new treads. Please help, the wife is upset about this not being done after a year.
