Squeaky subfloor TandG joint
After removing the carpet and pad I am going to use self stick tile on the 3/4 ply T&G subfloor. There are numerous nails 6 " apart, no.8's. I screwed in about 10 deck screws near the squeak and countersunk. Still squeaks! Finally I realized I think it's in the joint. My solution is to make a saw cut down to the tongue to open the joint and then put epoxy down into the joint. The subfloor was glued to the joists, but not in the T&G joints...darn! Looking for a "better" idea besides talcum powder!
Thanks, bill

Graphite.
You are proposing way too much work to fix that squeak. Lubricate it and be done with it.

The minute I made the thin kerf cut the squeak disappeared. I filled the joint with Durhams wood putty, sanded it all smooth. Good to go....I think!

Why are you using peel and stick? They won't last.

Squeaky subfloor TandG joint
All the rest of my vinyl tile was applied with mastic/adhesive. I just used the peel and stick at a remodel/ rental house, but "won't last" wasn't on my mind for that unit. They do look great and were a cinch to install, once I figured out the goofy pattern. You don't recommend them, I guess?
I'm 67 yrs old how long would I have before ripping them out? What is the main problem adhesive failure? Thanks for the info. |

If they get wet they won't stay down. They are also not durable, but I can see using them in a rental.

They also slide and relocate themselves under the pressure of furniture legs and ladders and such.

I thought the rule was "no advertising". Thank you for removing the ad.

From setting the straight edge, adjusting the saw depth, mixing the Durhams. Waiting 1 hr for it to harden (not counted as repair time), belt sanding the whole floor about 15 mins. (5'x6' area not counted as repair time). Floor is prepped for sealant and tile. The squeak was the T&G plywood shifting in the joint between the joists as you stood in between. A from the top repair.
I thought so as well. From a 1 post guy, too. Probably a rule has been broken here. Last edited by woodnthings; 06-20-2009 at 06:57 PM. |
