I have old stairs from 1930. They squeak like crazy. I have no access to underneath the stairs. There are nails in the treads. I know nails may cause squeaking. Do I need to remove these nails and apply screws where needed to eliminate the squeaking? Where all do I need to apply the screws? Please help. I'd like to fix the squeaks before installing carpet. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem as the OP. I don't have access to underneath and I have about 15 steps most of which are squeaky. The stringer appears in good shape, but the treads and risers could be loose. What options exist without being able to work from underneath ?
