Some carpet laying questions

I was watching someone install carpet for me recently, and I was wondering:
1) How do you make sure you cut the carpet long enough so it tucks neatly into the space between the wall and the tack strip?
2) How do you make sure the edge of the carpet against the wall looks neat? I've seen edges where the carpet was obviously flattened between the tack strip and the wall, looks crappy.
3) I was told you don't hit the kicker directly with your knee, but the installer did just that. I thought you get injured that way?

Thanks

3. Use a power stretcher. Use of a kicker violates the carpet warranty.
