Slate tiles on floor and walls

I have a small 5' x 7' half bath on my first floor. I have always loved the look of slate, so was planning to do slate in there. i have a couple questions

if i do the walls also, will it be too dark and overwhelming in such a small space?

what size tiles do you reccommend? I've always heard small tiles for small spaces, so is that 6 x 6 ? do you use different size on walls?

How high up the wall do you go? I was thinking to just under the window.

I know a lot of this comes down to personal taste, but if i do all this work ( and spend all this $$) and don't like the result I'll be stuck living with it for a while, so any input will be greatly appreciated.

that size bath you would be taking a risk unless you pick out a lighter Slate. 12X12 floor with 6x6 wall and incorporate some diagonals...
That would be nice-

If you were gonna go up the walls. Just a wainscotting level would look good. You can top this with a chair rail or listello. You could still use 12" tile throughout.

What's the dimensions of your room?
Can you give me a sketch or blueprint?

I'll draw a 3D mockup of the two sizes in Sketchup for you so you can get an idea of how it will look.

North and south wall are 5' wide. East and west are 7' long. North wall has a window in center. south wall has the entrance door, almost all the way on the western side. Eastern wall has sink and toilet. sink near the door, toilet near window.

hope this makes sense

How far up from the floor is the bottom of the window trim (ft and inches)?

Here's some rough tile designs I did in Sketchup for your bath with your dimensions.
  • 12" floor and wall (which I like best; and would be easiest to do)
  • 12" floor and 6" wall
  • 6" floor and wall

Just make sure your sub floor can handle the weight of those tiles! Any deflection is going to be disaster!!! Minimum is 2 layers of exterior grade ply with a 3/4" on the first layer!
