Slate Tile...

Hello everyone!

My question is this....

I put down slate tile in my half bath, I have NOT grouted yet and i was wondering if there is a way to protect the slate from the grout? Meaning, the slate is porous and colorful, and I do not want the grout to fill in the top of the tile. I was at Lowes and the guy in the flooring department recommend Tile Guard Penetrating Sealer to coat the slate first before I grout. He said the grout would wipe right off the top of the slate and not comprise the look of the slate.

Does this sound right to you?

Thanks in advance,

-J

Just paint it on with a brush paying close attention to all the nooks and crannies of the surfaces. Some guys worry about getting sealer between the tiles but I never give it any concern, I don't think it's a problem.

Have fun!

I just recently did a slate tile job and didnt seal it before the grout. It made it a little tougher to wipe all the grout off the top of the tile, but it didnt change the look of the tile. The glossy sealer I put on after all was finished made the colors really pop. I know you can do it either way, good luck with the rest of the project!

Good choice on the slate. We added it in our foyer (after using it for a patio in our last house) and it looks great! Don't worry too much about imperfections from grout or sealers -- it is supposed to look a little lived in!

I used a gloss sealer from home depot. Very easy to use...just put it on with those cheap foam brushes you can get anywhere. Here is a link to the sealer.

Sorry about that, it works when I click on it. Anyway, the stuff is called TileLab gloss sealer and finish. Just go to homedepot.com and search for it...comes in a yellow bottle. I am sure there is tons of other stuff out there that you can use also for similar results.

Here is the finished product........

I still have some scrubbing to do but nothing major. I got all of the trim done for around the doors, windows and bathtub access panel.
