Slate over old glue

I am planning to put natural slate tile on concrete slab floor in the house. I removed the original 1957 9"x9"vinyl tiles and I am left with traces of the original black glue everywhere. The question is... Can I lay the new slate tiles(using standard adhesive thin set) directly over the concrete covered with this old black glue? The area is approx. 70sf and I am trying to avoid grinding the glue off the concrete or using an adhesive chemical remover.
Please help!
Thanks, Paul C.

Slate over old glue

Hi Paul,

Grinding would not work very well plus that black adhesive probably contains asbestos as your tile most likely did. Making dust would not be the way to go.

Using a chemical solvent to cut the adhesive would also be a bad move. it'll drive the adhesive and chemical deeper into the concrete creating a bond breaker.

You need to cut the cutback off with a razor cutter known as a wallpaper remover. Any hardware store. Cut untill there is only a film left, you will see concrete.

Then use a thin set that claims to be compatible with cutback, it'll say so on the bag.
