Im a new home owner and I figure since I haven't moved in yet now would be the time to seal the basement floor. The basement has flooded once before but the crack that caused it to leak has been repaired with epoxy. What do you guys suggest I do? I eventually plan on finishing half of the basement but that is a long ways down the road.
Sealing will do no good.
90% of the water proofing and prevention is done outside to prevent the water from getting there in the first place.
Grade running away from the foundtion, working gutters, drain tiles.
There also should be a sump pump in the basement.
Yes we do have a sump pump. I have a small leak on one side of the basement wall. It doesn't leak when its raining outside, but I though it might have something to do with ground thawing out?
I am no expert on this by any means and I do agree with the previous poster, that most of this is caused from other things. However, I would think it would not hurt to do this and it could help. So why not do it.
similar to wood2; I"m also a new homeowner with a basement ....(in CA) and I'd like to finish the concrete floor as inexpensively as possible. Considering a concrete Etching Stain such as Quikrete with a high gloss sealer. My quickie budget for the 1,000 sq ft basement is about $800 or about 80 cents / sq ft. My questions:
1 - Do i need to sand / prep the concrete prior to staining for a smoother final finish?
2 - Is there a another flooring material that would cost less?
3 - Any other flooring recommendations / comments / suggestions?
If you seal that floor, you will not be able to stain or tile it down the road, unless you compleatly remove the sealer, and that would require grinding the surface.
