should i remove hardwood floor or carpet over? Please help

Our upstairs hardwood floors currently have carpeting over them. They squeak something horrible.

We're going to replace the carpet and the baseboard (needs updating).

Should I try to silence the squeaky hardwood or just tear it out? (We're carpeting either way).

Also, if we just carpet over the hardwood floor should we leave a gap underneath the baseboard for the carpet? (currently has the original baseboard and show)

Thank you in advance for the advice.

I would probably try to fix the squeaky floor. As far as the baseboards, I like them on the floor. Some installers like them raised 3/8 inch or so. The carpet will look fine whichever option you choose as long as you don't get a bigger gap under them than the thickness of the carpet.

Thanks for the advice. Any tips on fixing the squeaky floor? I've been told to use graphite powder and squeak no more?
