second floor noise - styrofoam?

Bought a house. When you're trying to sleep on the first floor and people walk on the second floor it is very noisy. The carpets are old and need to be replaced anyway. I'm kicking around the idea of buying 2" sheets of styrofoam and installing the flooring on top of them. Is this a good idea or is it a boneheaded move that I will regret?

No idea how in the world you came up with that idea, Bad Bad now go stand in the corner. LOL
A better carpet pad would be a big help, still not enough, you could add another layer of sheetrock to the ceiling below. Far better to just use a thicker carpet pad.

Part of the warmth in a second floor room is from the rising heat from the room below. Use foam and that's not going to happen.
There would be no way to install carpet strips over foam.

Just to add a little to what Joe said, pull the carpet and screw the sub-floor better to the floor joists too.

Andy.

When you say noisy, is it squeaks you are hearing or do you hear the footsteps?

Noisy as in it sounds like an elephant or a tank. Loud thumps. Not so much squeaks.
